Um, steel core is not quite the same as iron jacket. But both are bad, bad on steel targets. Harder metal than copper or lead = hotter at the melt point = more cratering at the same impact distance. What kind of bullet were you shooting on that day? I shoot my AR500 silhouette at 100 yards with a 7.62x54, Russian surplus ammo, from a 1943 Mosin-Nagant Sniper and it did much more than a scratch. Did not go through but made a nice deep hole in the steel (cannot remember the thickness of my silhouette, that could also make a difference). 3-4 years ago myself and 2 others went in on a sheet, and the metal vendor cut it for us on his robotic water table.
