The UL inspector only had two problems: 1) The compressors weren't UL-508 recognized, since there isn't a category for them in 508. We obtained approval on them by putting GFCI breakers on each. 2) The bulkhead fittings passing the sample air in and out of the panel weren't UL-508 recognized (not much surprise there, since they weren't electrical). Longtime reader, first time poster. I hope I can ask a not-specifically-NEC question here. I have an industrial machine (I follow NFPA79 and UL 508A) requiring the main 480V/3ph disconnect and circuit breaker to be in a separate enclosure from my control panel. It will be directly adjacent. With the earlier mentioned NEMA 3R enclosure - there will not be any KO's in the top or sides (maybe near bottom on sides) and may or may not have KO's in the bottom. Hard to maintain a raintight rating if you have KO's in the top or high on the sides.
The concept behind explosion-proof electrical enclosures is that if there is an electrical arc inside the enclosure and this ignites explosive gases INSIDE the enclosure that the escape path for the hot gas from the inside of the enclosure to the outside will cause sufficient cooling of the gas so that it will not ignite the surrounding air . I have a question about testing a machine that has ex proof electrical enclosure and some motors and switches according to UL 1203 and the classification is CLASS 1 DIV 2. is this mean that I need to test the electrical enclosure according to UL 1203 ONLY?? and what is the necessary tests according to this standard?? It also depends on the location and the definition of "panel". The requirements for listing by an NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Lab, of which UL is one of many) vary from state to state and even by large cities. The National Electric Code does not specifically require NRTL listing, but implies it in many places.
